Born in free India in 1959, Soumitra Dutta has a free spirit and a passion for capturing moments from nature through his lens, for all time to come. The lyrical poetry in nature arouses aesthetic pleasure and the more you delve into this beauty the more you savour its essence and the ultimate result is aesthetic bliss. Soumitra has a keen ear for the music of nature. It is this sensitivity that has drawn him to nature again and again. Nature is the ultimate provider of all our emotions and feelings of devotion, love, joy, wonder, scorn, fury, disgust, dejection, and peace. Soumitra draws support from nature for his emotions and feelings. He hears the music of nature and captures it for others. The myriads of colours that nature adorns itself with, has moved his artistic abilities to capture all its moods. His creative ability finds a fitting outlet through his lenses.
Soumitra had discovered his true love in his days of innocence and it is this love, which has shaped and moulded him in his life of experience.
His medium of expression is photography and his subject matter is nature of which he is an integral part.
He has to his credit many exhibitions. Acclaimed as one of the very best in his genre by both critics and connoisseurs, his artistic eye for perfection, beauty and truth will make him run a long innings. In 1985 Soumitra shared space with another artist for an exhibition at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. After a gap of six years he held an exclusive exhibition of his photographs at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. His 1995 solo exhibition on landscapes at Academy of Fine Arts,a part of “Three Exhibitions.” came in for his immense popularity. A landscape solo at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata followed soon. Connoisseurs acclaimed the 2002 landscape solo at Kharagpur, hosted by KAPA . The very next year a solo landscape at Academy of Fine Arts was inaugurated by none other than Raghu Rai. In 2004 a Special solo exhibition on landscape photography at CPA’S Piramal Gallery, NCPA, Mumbai was held. [Inaugurated by Raghu Rai.] Times Journal of Photography was media partner for the show. This and a workshop on landscape photography hosted by Times group [Times Journal of Photography] at Mumbai was in the same year. In 2007, a special solo exhibition on Landscapes, hosted by Jara Parijaee, was held at Academy Of Fine Arts, Kolkata with extraordinary success. He has to his credit two published photo albums on Landscapes one in Black and white and the other in colour. Soumitra had been a joint course Co-ordinator and Fellow teacher of Photographic Course under the aegis of ACEEC of Jadavpur University.
He is a much sought after artist in his line by the media.
While he started with the agfa Click camera, soumitra now shoots with a Nikon D3 and D700 with Nikon’s prime lenses.
He uses hasselblad X-Pan with all its three lenses. he likes it because of its dual format capability.
His dream kit is a hasselblad hD3ll with its full set of lenses. he is also looking forward to using the Nikon D3X.
